Noncommunicable diseases (NCDs), also known as chronic diseases, are not passed from person to person. They are of long duration and generally exhibit slow progression (World Health Organization, ). Premature deaths from noncommunicable diseases or living long term with a noncommunicable disease and its related disability has put an increasing strain on health systems, economic development and well-being of large parts of the population. Consequently, non-communicable diseases are one of the major challenges for sustainable development in the 21st century (United Nations, ).
