In 1905 Edwin Arnold created a character that many feel changed the courseof Science Fiction and that character's name was Lt. Gullivar Jones. Though itsreception was lukewarm at the time of its publication, Arnold's tale ofGullivar's journey to mars and falling in love with a Martian princess isthought by many to have inspired the Martian tales of Edgar Rice Burroughs, written some six years later. The time is post Civil War America. Lt. Gullivar Jones, a distinguished Navyofficer, is tired of not receiving the promotion he feels he deserves anddesperately needs to be able to marry his fiance.
