Die Bandbreite seines schriftstellerischen Schaffens ist immens und reicht von historischen Jugendromanen bis zu Gruselgeschichten. Seine Bücher wurden bislang in neun Sprachen übersetzt. Er lebt mit seiner Frau und zwei Katzen in einem kleinen Küstenort in England.
