Das Bauhaus wurde seit seiner Gründung vor 90 Jahren in Weimar immer wieder von den unterschiedlichsten Gruppierungen instrumentalisiert. Neben den bekannten Zwistigkeiten innerhalb des Bauhauses brachte auch die Rezeption dieser Ikone der Moderne durch die Außenwelt widersprüchliche, ja gegensätzliche Positionen hervor: Sozialisten, Kommunisten, Nationalsozialisten, Stalinisten, Kapitalisten, kalte Krieger, Studentenrevoluzzer und Dissidenten erschufen im Zuge deutscher Identitätskonstruktionen jeweils unterschiedliche Bilder des Bauhauses. Die Publikation stellt mit einer Vielzahl von Essays die Frage nach den grundsätzlichen Konflikten, die das Bauhaus-Erbe bis heute mit sich bringt. Sie beleuchtet auch, wie eine Avantgarde durch Formalisierung und Musealisierung Gefahr laufen kann, selbst zur Tradition oder zur reinen »Fassade« zu werden. And the controversy did not end with the closure of the Bauhaus itself. Yet nothing else revealed Bauhaus ideas and ideology as well as these confrontations did. Through them, the basic issues of the modernist program became clear. It became obvious that there was no such thing as one kind of modernism, just as there was no ONE Bauhaus; instead, there were different, contradictory, and even oppositional movements and positions: the Bauhauses.
Few cultural movements have been as politically instrumentalized as the Bauhaus has. These controversies reflect the relationship between politics and culture in the twentieth century, and hence, the history of the construction of German identity.
