Es gehört zu den Paradoxien des Mediums Fotografie, dass der Betrachter unaufhörlich von einer auf das dargestellte Motiv bezogenen Wahrnehmung zu einer ästhetischen Betrachtung wechselt und umgekehrt. Hiroshi Sugimoto, einer der bekanntesten Künstler unserer Zeit, hat wie kaum ein anderer die unterschiedlichen Aspekte des Mediums reflektiert und in eindrucksvollen Bildfolgen anschaulich gemacht, wobei er in der Regel ein Sujet in den Mittelpunkt gestellt hat. Auf Dioramen folgten Kinos, Seelandschaften, Horrorkabinette, Architekturaufnahmen, Porträts, Kiefern, konzeptuelle Formen und andere Motive.
Dieser Band stellt erstmals einen Werkkomplex vor, an dem der Künstler seit längerem arbeitet: Unter dem Titel Revolution werden nächtliche Meeresansichten im großen Format gezeigt, die den Lauf des Mondes während einer längeren Zeitdauer festhalten. Durch die besondere Art der Präsentation im Ausstellungszusammenhang die Bilder werden um 90 Grad gekippt ergeben sich irritierende Eindrücke, die sich je nach Weltregion und Breitengrad deutlich unterscheiden.
